Robber shot in jewelry store heist

On Monday, shots were fired in the 2700 block of West Devon Avenue. When police arrived at the scene they found Musa Thomas, 19, lying on the ground with a backpack filled with jewelry. Thomas earlier had entered the jewelry store armed with a gun and held the owner, his wife, and two young grandchildren hostage as he ransacked the store. Thomas threatened the family and fire two shots in the store.

The owner, Georgi Layous who is paralyzed on his right side from a stroke years ago was able to retrieve a gun and shoot Thomas in the left hip while Thomas was filling his bag with jewelry. Layous said that Thomas had been a patron of the jewelry store for many years and when Thomas announced a robbery, Layous thought he was joking. Thomas was taken to the hospital under police custody and will be in front of a judge after he receives medical care.
