Acclaimed Los Angeles rock n' roll photographer Rob Shanahan has just returned from touring with Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band. This summer's tour traveled through the U.S. and Canada, climaxing with the show at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.
Shanahan, recognized as one of music's most published photographers, also recently released his first book of fantastic photographs entitled Volume 1. Designed by graphic designer Hillary Weiss, this book highlights fifteen years of Shanahan's intimate images. Shots feature legendary musicians including Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, Dave Grohl, Quincy Jones, Sheila E, Dave Navarro, Slash, Sarah McLachlan, and many more.
During this interview with Shanahan, it was exciting catching up with him regarding his experiences on this summer's All-Starr tour and his new images. The tour included classic musicians Todd Rundgren, Steve Lukather, Gregg Rolie, Richard Page, Mark Rivera, Gregg Bissonette, and, of course, Ringo Starr himself.
L.C. On the most recent tour with Ringo and his All-Starr Band, which aspect of the shows do you feel your newest images reveal most directly?
R.S. Definitely the camaraderie… these guys are definitely brothers, and genuinely loved playing with each other. You can't fake that for the camera.
L.C. How does the context of the location for each concert impact the resulting images?
R.S. Even though we traveled with the same light show, the lighting was always different depending on the venue. Also, there was a good mix of indoor/outdoor venues. So, every show looked different.
