Rob Ryan hired by Saints as new defensive coordinator

The New Orleans Saints have hired Rob Ryan, former Dallas Cowboys assistant coach, as the new defensive coordinator for the Saints after Todd Grantham, University of Georgia, withdrew his name from consideration according to a report on Friday, Feb. 8.

Ryan interviewed with Sean Payton, head coach of the New Orleans Saints on Thursday and a decision was quickly made by both parties on the hiring. The hiring of Ryan fills the position of Steve Spagnuolo, who was fired earlier this year at the end of January.

Payton had this to say about the addition of Ryan to the coaching staff, "In regards to Rob, we have experience in preparing and playing against his defense and they've always been challenging in terms of different looks and pressures that they feature. Rob is enthusiastic about joining our team and getting right to work."

Payton announced that the hiring of Ryan would bring a change to the 4-3 up front to a 3-4 alignment to correct the embarrassing 7,042 total yards (and NFL record) the team allowed last season. The Saints ended the troubled 2012 season (of suspensions) 7-9.
