Rob Lowe talks Casey Anthony jury, Lifetime movie

On Jan. 18, 2013, Fox News spoke with Rob Lowe regarding his role in the upcoming Lifetime movie “Prosecuting Casey Anthony” and addressed his views regarding the trial and stunning verdict. Casey Anthony was acquitted on July 5, 2011, on charges she murdered her two-year-old daughter Caylee Anthony in June 2008. The jury returned a not guilty verdict on three charges of first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter and aggravated child abuse, leaving those who watched the drama unfold in the media for three years in a state of shock and awe. Rob Lowe portrays prosecutor Jeff Ashton in the film and shared with Fox News how he felt that social media networking sites, such as Twitter, contributed to the not guilty verdict.

Fox specifically asked Lowe why he thought the jury acquitted Anthony. Lowe responded, “Jeff Ashton has a great quote that I say. In his 30 years of being a prosecutor he had never come across a jury more anxious to assume facts favorable to a defendant without any proof. I think that’s what’s fun about the movie. People will debate this question.”

Continuing, Lowe explained, “For the life of me if I had an answer I’d love to tell it to you. I have no earthly clue but when you really walk a mile in these prosecutors’ shoes I do think it gives you a different perspective on the case and maybe it will give some people who watch it an answer to that question.”

Lowe also spoke about his initial shock regarding the verdict but explained that while working on the film and learning more details regarding what evidence made it to trial, what evidence was excluded and the impact that pre-trial publicity had on the selected jury pool.

One thing that everyone involved in the Casey Anthony case agrees upon is that pre trial publicity negatively impacted jury selection, the case and the pursuit of justice.
