Looking for some quick and flavorful snacks or appetizers? How about a side of roasted garlic? Roasting garlic brings out all the sweetness and smooth flavor of the bulb. Garlic is easily roasted in the oven, although if you enjoy garlic this way, you may wish to invest in a garlic roaster which will cut the roasting time in half. You can add variety by using flavored olive oil (olive oil infused with basil, for example) to drizzle over the garlic. Hydrogrowers at the 2nd Street Market has great local garlic, and on the right side of the Hydrogrowers table you will find an assortment of lovely olive oils and balsamic vinegars. You can ask all the questions you like and sample the olive oils and vinegars, and no one will rush you through your purchases.
Another quick snack or side dish courtesy of 2nd Street Market is quark (fresh unripened cheese) with apples. Blue Jacket Dairy at the west end of the market has wonderful quark, a smooth, spreadable natural cheese. If you are lucky enough to get in on the pumpkin quark (seasonal and in limited quantities) you’ll want to buy extra (it freezes well). Plain quark and lemon quark are available all year long. Whatever flavor quark you choose, it is delicious on toast, bagels, muffins, or with slices of apples or bananas.
