Roadrunner Soccer has secured their first win of the season as they managed a 1-0 victory over Sam Houston State in the first match of the UTSA Classic on Friday night at the Park West Athletic Complex.
The match reunited the former Southland Conference foes and started slowly as both sides looked to try to assert dominance in midfield and control the possession and flow of the match.
After the 20th minute UTSA started to take control and they had their lead in the 30th minute after three shots left Sam Houston State helpless as Brianna Livecchi's shot came back off the post before Alexis Alaniz shot on the rebound.
Alaniz saw her shot saved by Kylie Hambleton but that rebound then fell to Anissa Munson who duly tapped home the rebound to give UTSA a 1-0 lead.
That seemed to wake up SHSU as they had more of the ball for the last ten minutes of the first half and were able to generate plenty of corners but the UTSA defense routinely got in the way, denying the Bearkats their goal.
The second half saw Sam Houston come out from the break determined to get the match back to parity but the Roadrunners defense continued to be strong and held out the Bearkats
At the hour mark UTSA re took control but their eagerness often got in the way as too often they gave chances away thanks to a foul on one of the Bearkats players that would hand possession back.
Sam Houston State had their best opportunity in the 67th minute as Shelby McDaniel's corner found Megan Bennett but she sent her effort over the bar letting UTSA off the hook.
With time running out SHSU really went for it but the UTSA defense held firm blocking the late shots and keeping out a series of corners to seal a 1-0 win.
