Roadrunners manage eighth win

UTSA claimed their eighth win of the season as they defeated former conference rivals, Nichols, 76-58 at the Convocation Center in their BracketBusters game on Saturday afternoon.

It was a balanced offense from UTSA with Kannon Burrage, Jeromie Hill and Michael Hale III combining for 49 points.

Hill managed his third double-double of the year as he returned to form following his comeback from injury with 12 rebounds.

UTSA were impressive from distance in the opening stages of the half as they made six of their first seven three-point attempts in building a 23-13 lead.

A solid comeback from Nichols trimmed that deficit down as a 3-pointer and layup from Amin Torres made it a two basket game at 27-23.

The Roadrunners responded with an 8-2 run which included a stunning one-handed dunk from Hyjii Thomas to push the lead back out to double figures.

The lead got pushed out as far as 13 with a 43-30 lead with 1:53 to play before the Roadrunner eventually took a 45-33 lead in to the half.

A 7-0 run from Nichols early in the half put them back in with a shot as they cut the deficit to seven at 47-40.

JaMarcus Horace managed a layup for Nichols with 13:19 to play to keep the visitors in touch at 54-44 but UTSA hit back, holding Nichols scoreless for almost five minutes, while scoring 13 points of their own in the process.

That run gave UTSA a 67-44 lead before Jeremy Smith finally got another basket for the Colnels with 8:31 remaining.

Nichols used a late run to pull closer at 70-58 with two minutes to play but UTSA stood firm for a comfortable win.
