Road trip: Saints playoff bound with 42-17 victory over Buccaneers

With the Carolina Panthers winning against the Atlanta Falcons earlier on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, the New Orleans Saints could do nothing but work on getting into the playoffs. A win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and they were in. A loss and they'd need the Arizona Cardinals to lose for them to get into the postseason.

The Saints were able to stay perfect at home by taking down the Bucs 42-17 and playing their way into the playoffs.

The first quarter opened up with a bang as Drew Brees found Lance Moore for a 44-yard touchdown to start things off. Minutes later, the Bucs performed a flea-flicker to perfection as Mike Glennon found Tiquan Underwood for a 48-yard score to tie it at seven.

Five minutes later, Brees found Jimmy Graham for a 10-yard score to make it 14-7 in favor of the Saints to end the first quarter.

The second quarter saw much of the same as Brees connected with Robert Meachem for a 41-yard score and rookie Kenny Stills for a 76-yard touchdown. In between those scores, Tim Wright scored on a one-yard pass from Glennon.

At the half, the Saints led 28-14 on a first half that saw Brees complete 17 of 21 passes for 321 yards and four touchdowns.

With the start of the second half, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers put together a good drive that ran for more than half of the quarter, but it amounted to just a 54-yard field goal by Rian Lindell. In return, the Saints put together a great 92-yard drive that ended with an eight-yard touchdown run by Pierre Thomas to make it 35-17.

On the next play, Keenan Lewis picked off Mike Glennon and the Saints were back on offense with a determination to run the ball, but it was still Brees getting it done. A mere three plays later and Brees ran it in from nine yards out for a 42-17 lead.

The fourth quarter consisted of the Saints doing their best to run out the clock and the Bucs simply trying to put any more points on the board, but there was no coming back for Tampa Bay.
