At a joint gala and stage presentation on Fri., Jan. 3, artistic directors Kelly Fouchi and Gary Rucker revealed the names and schedule dates for their shows, which include four musicals and two non-musical plays.
The season gets underway with Jeanine Tesori's "Shrek: The Musical" running rom Sept. 12-27 and to be directed by Rucker. If recent productions like "Monty Python's Spamalot" and "42nd Street" prove anything about the company, it's that they can handle large scale productions and pull them off brilliantly.
As happened with "Annie" this holiday season, Rucker and Fouchi have elected to present a family-friendly musical in December. Alan Menken's "A Christmas Carol," which was presented at Madison Square Garden for ten years, will make its New Orleans premiere on the main stage from Dec. 5-21.
Though it's still more than a year away, "The Will Rogers Follies: A Life in Revue" will return to a local stage when Fouchi directs this marvelous Cy Coleman work that won nine Tony Awards including Best Musical. It runs Jan. 16-31 in 2015.
The original Graham-penned "When Ya Smilin'," a tale of growing up in New Orleans in the 1950s, will return to the local stage. When it first appeared on the scene in 2001, it was awarded a Big Easy Theatre Award for Best Original Play. That show will run from March 13-28, 2015 and will be directed by the playright.
The closer for the season will be a delicious reunion of several of the cast members of the regional premiere of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" set for May 8-23 in 2015. When that work was originally presented on the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts (NOCCA) Lupin Theatre stage three years ago, it starred Bob Pavlovich, Rucker and Fouchi to great success. All three of them will be reprising their roles in this Tony Award winning musical to be directed by Rucker.
