Riverfront coffee house Aster Café reopens with tap beer and breakfast

Wine, beer, breakfast and live music will be part of the new mix as the Aster Café, 125 Main Street SE, expands into prime time.

The charming coffee house on historic Main Street and the Minneapolis riverfront will now serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, and pour wine and beer until midnight seven days a week. The opening target date is Sunday, May 23, according to Aster’s Facebook page.

Aster Cafe was closed for several weeks this spring while new owners Matty O’Reilly and Tom Peterson proceeded with the behind-the-scenes facelift. O’Reilly and Peterson are building a reputation for resurrecting coffee houses. They employed the same successful food, wine, coffee and music formula at the 318 cafe on Water Street in Excelsior. The 318 daytime café and coffeehouse transforms into a “live music listening room by night.” O’Reilly says he also plans to launch live music at the Aster this fall.

Realizing they had acquired a gem of a space along the Minneapolis riverfront, the new owners decided to encourage its appeal as a gathering spot. They kept the Aster’s charming aspects including the exposed brick walls, antique espresso machine, and tree-lined patio courtyard. But they added a hand-carved wooden bar, floor-to-ceiling wine rack, beer taps and more dining tables. Customers can cozy up to the bar with a flatbread pizza and glass of wine.

Breakfast will be served each day. The newly posted breakfast menu includes waffles with banana/nutella or fresh berries and crème fraiche, and a variety of scrambled egg sandwich combinations including bacon, brie, ham, cheddar, spinach, roasted onion, and avocado. Fresh fruit, quiche and oatmeal are also available.

Lunch and dinner menu options include a variety of inventive small plates, cheese plates, salads, sandwiches and flatbread pizzas for $8.25. Sandwiches and salads range from $7 to $9. The creative tap beer menu includes local brews like Rush River, a chocolate oatmeal stout from River Falls, Wisc., Fulton, a sweet child of vine ipa from Minneapolis, and Furthermore, a knot stock pale ale from Black River Falls, Wisc. Rest assured, the new owners are not abandoning Aster’s coffee house tradition. You can pick up an iced coffee, latte or cappuccino for $2 to $3 and select from at least two dozen loose leaf teas including herbal and organic options.

Their coffee is actually cheaper than the previous resident. Sweet. I need to check this place out after work one day, the hours have vastly improved from the last few months of Aster.

The food still seems a bit pricey, but very much inline with the price ranges of the other nearby restaurants.
