River Phoenix's final film 'Dark Blood' to premiere at MIFF

River Phoenix's final film, "Dark Blood," is set to premier in North America at the 30th annual Miami International Film Festival, MIFF executive director Jaie Laplante announced Tuesday, Jan. 15 according to MSN.

As previously reported it has been over actor River Phoenix died from a drug over dose in L.A. Before his untimely death River Phoenix was filming a new movie called "Dark Blood" that film has finally been completed according to People magazine reports on Thursday, Nov.1.

October 31, 2012 marked the 19th anniversary of River Phoenix's death at the age of 23. River collapsed and died of drug-induced heart failure on the sidewalk outside of pal Johnny Depp's West Hollywood nightclub The Viper Room. At the time of his death Phoenix had been working on his new film, "Dark Blood" that had only been about 80 percent completed.

That film is now completed thanks to Danish director George Sluizer, who had taken on the project, completed it and has now shown the film at one film festival, hoping to seek a broader release for the project.

Phoenix plays a young widower named Boy in "Dark Blood" who goes to live in the desert, where he meets two stranded vacationers. "Phoenix exerts a suitably charismatic and commanding air in his final role, making Boy a complex, fully mature character," Variety writes in its review of the film.

George Sluizer is reported by Variety to have filled in the movie's gaps using his own voiceovers, which have lead to a "surprisingly coherent vision of a decidedly oddball story."

Dark Blood had its world premiere in September at the Netherlands Film Festival.

In River Phoenix's short lived life his work encompassed 24 films and television appearances, including the science fiction adventure film Explorers, the coming-of-age film Stand By Me, the action sequel Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and the independent adult drama My Own Private Idaho. Phoenix's meteoric rise to fame led to his status as a "teen sensation".

River Phoenix was the oldest brother of fellow actors Rain, Joaquin, Liberty, and Summer Phoenix.
