River Cats top Topes in day-game contest

River Cats 7, Isotopes 2
at Sacramento
Wednesday, July 30

After dropping their last three, including the first of the current eight-game home stand Tuesday night, the River Cats banged out a 7-2 win over the visiting Albuquerque Isotopes on Wednesday during a rare 12:05 pm start at Raley Field.

Sacramento starter, Arnold Leon got his PCL tying 10th win against five loses on the season. The right-hander allowed two runs (both earned) on seven hits over 6.1 innings. He walked two, and struck out five Isotope batters.

Drew Carpenter lasted just 4.0 innings for the Topes. The demise for Carpenter came in the way of the base on balls. Most telling was the one he issued to River Cats center fielder, Nick Buss to lead off the home half of the first inning. Everything seemed to spiral downhill from there. A double to right by the two-hole batter Jake Elmore got Buss over to third, leaving Shane Peterson to drive him home with a single to right and a 1-0 lead. An RBI single by Nate Freiman to left field and a sac-fly by Colin Walsh put the Cats up for good coming out of the first frame with the 3-0 advantage.

Albuquerque scattered eight hits, plating just one base runner in each of the third and seventh innings. Mini threats to get things going for the Isotopes occurred in both innings. Shortstop, Carlos Triunfel doubled to left field to lead off the third inning and Clint Robinson’s two-out double to center sent Triunfel to the plate. Jamie Romack struck out swinging to end the inning. A one-out triple by the still hot Triunfel, followed by a Chone Figgins single produced the final run of the game for the Topes.

Freiman, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI, led the River Cats 12-hit attack. Elmore and Anthony Aliotti both had a pair of doubles on the day.

Sacramento holds a 3.0 game lead over Reno in the PCL Pacific Northern Division and a 10.0 game lead over rival Fresno (Giants). The River Cats continue their home stand with a 7:05 pm start against Albuquerque on Thursday.

Zach Neal (4-5 4.63 ERA) is on the hill for the River Cats. He faces the Isotopes fellow right-hander Zach Lee (6-9 5.18 ERA).
