My maiden voyage to Ashford University Field was good for me, but it didn't go well for the Quad Cities River Bandits. They went into the final game of the series being down 0-2, but were unable to avoid the sweep, as the Clinton LumberKings poured all their runs into the 6th inning to win 6-1.
River Bandits' starter Chris Devenski (2-3, 5.64 ERA) had better results the last time he faced the LumberKings when the River Bandits won, 7-3. Even though he allowed only 5 hits Friday night, compared to giving up 11 hits exactly a week ago, the LumberKings were able to turn those 5 hits into 5 runs against Devenski, and added another 2 hits and 1 run against River Bandits' reliever Mitchell Lambson, before Lambson struck out the final two batters to end the 6th. Lambson would finish the game strong by striking out a total of 6 batters, while only walking 2.
LumberKings' David Holman (3-6, 3.29 ERA) baffled the River Bandit batters the whole night by spreading 6 hits and only 1 run through almost 8 innings of work. Holman struck out 6 batters, while only walking 1. The River Bandits went down 1-2-3 in 4 of the 9 innings. Oliver Garcia entered during the 8th for the LumberKings to finish the game with no hits, 2 walks, and 1 strikeout to seal the win.
3 River Bandits reached base twice on a single and a walk each: Carlos Correa, Danry Vasquez, and Bobby Borchering. Vasquez was able to score River Bandits' lone run in the 2nd when he reached with a ground ball single up the middle, followed by Borchering's single which pushed Vasquez to 3rd. Ruiz hit a shot on the 3rd base line to score Vasquez. River Bandits stranded 5 runners throughout the contest.
River Bandits have dropped 4 in a row, including the 1st two games of this series, 7-9 and 5-6. They remain 2nd in the Midwest League Western, which keeps them in good position to qualify for the post-season, as long as they can turn things around. They return home Saturday night, August 17, to start off a 4-game series with Burlington Bees, followed by a 3-game series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels starting on August 21st. Go River Bandits!
