This years music scene is growing with soon-to-be classics such as Iggy Azalea's "Fancy," and last years hit "Royals" by Lorde. Other artists such as Betty Who, Charli XCX and Sam Smith are leaving their musical imprint on the charts as well. These artists have one thing in common, they are soon-to-be music superstars from across the pond.
Who, born Jessica Newham, is a 22-year-old from Australia, looking to strike the U.S. music scene. According to The Boston Globe article about Who, she was a cellist studying at Interlochen Center for the Arts before becoming the singer she is now. In February, Who's dance hit "Somebody Loves You" became the number one song on the Billboard Dance Club Songs list. The song was used in September 2013 for a marriage proposal, and the video currently has over 12 million views on YouTube. Recently, Who performed at national gay and lesbian pride festivals in New York City and Los Angeles. Next for Who is The High Society Tour in October.
Another female powerhouse making waves in the music industry this year is English sensation Charlotte Aitchison, also known as Charli XCX. Writing and being featured on hits such as Icona Pop's "I Love It," and Iggy Azaelea's "Fancy," XCX has deeply seeded roots as a writer, and more recently has become a powerful singer on her own. XCX was featured on "The Fault in Our Stars" soundtrack with the song "Boom Clap," which according to Billboard is in the number 29 spot. Recently XCX admitted to passing up a collaboration with Christina Aguilera in an interview with Popjustice. The artist is currently working on an album that has yet to be named, according to Billboard.
This English male is sweeping the nation with his hit "Stay With Me," which currently is in the number three spot on iTunes, and his album "In The Lonely Hour" is in the same position. Sam Smith, is a 22-year-old from London, and is sweeping the U.S. airwaves with his music. Smith got his start by being featured in the 2012 song "Latch" by Disclosure. In 2013, Naughty Boy featured Smith on "La La La," which according to officialcharts.com was one of the top ten fastest selling number one singles of 2013 in the UK. Smith released his album in the summer of 2014, and later this year is scheduled to perform at Austin City Limits.
All of these artists have a promising music career, and each is already a rising star in their own right, and it seems 2014 may be the year of the international powerhouse in music.
