Rise N' Shine Shines in a non-descript East Brookfield Strip Mall

Who’d a thunk it. The strip mall along Route 9 looks dreary from the road. The driving range and mechanic shop to the right is the place of business of the skilled mechanic, Russ DiBarra. He is an expert who has done well by me, but his shop is never going to be mistaken for Home Depot.

The tiny mall houses a non-descript Chinese restaurant that if you mention it, the reply is usually something along the lines of, “Is that place still in business?”

So it was with complete shock that I heard that the Rise N’ Shine Diner, one of the strip’s tenants was a place worth a visit. Still not sure, every time I drove by in the morning, I would look at the parking lot. It never lacked for cars in front of the place. Hmm.

Okay, three of us would go of a hungry Sunday morning. Arriving separately, we entered together in to a homey and clean room of booths and a counter and some kitschy decoration. Two young women staffed the counter where we sat down as the booths were occupied. We were asked what we would like to drink as the silverware and menus were put in front of us.

Robin ordered the four-cheese omelet. All it was was just cheese and eggs, with wheat toast. Along with the bottomless cup of coffee she pronounced herself satisfied. Ciarán had the pancakes and home fries and I had biscuits and gravy with two eggs over easy and a side of bacon. All went well with my OJ.

The damage was pennies over $26.00. It was fun; the staff pleasant and nobody rushed us. You’ll hear about this place again when we do lunch.

Rise N’Shine is at 237 W Main St, East Brookfield, Massachusetts 01515-1508. It's not the classic dining car diner, but that's okay.
