The 2014 HYH RISE Awards, in honor of self-advocates with Down syndrome, nomination process ends March 15th and the voting begins on World Down Syndrome Day, March 21st. HYH, ‘Have You Heard?’ about the abilities of individuals with Down syndrome, founded by Yvonne Pierre, provides positive awareness and recognition to those who are making a difference in the Down syndrome community. The live, red carpet awards ceremony will be held in Atlanta, October, 2014.
“There are no losers or winners. The RISE awards serves as a platform not a competition. The stories, of individuals with Down syndrome, touch my heart and move my soul. RISE highlights the gifts, talents and accomplishments. They are all WINNERS,” said Pierre.
Past winners with DS include Patricia Moody, sign language teacher, Sujeet DeSai, musician who plays seven instruments and Oana Bogdanescu, Special Olympics participant.
Down syndrome, a genetic condition affects one in 800, is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21, where others have two, Ds has three. DS is associated with mild to moderate intellectual delays, developmental delays and characteristic facial features such as, slanted eyes and short flat nose.
Pierre produced an empowering stage play that benefited Emory DS Research, Then You Stand, about a expectant mother who learns her unborn baby has Down syndrome. Pierre holds four degrees and has a teenaged son, Zyon, with Down syndrome. Parenting Special Needs magazine featured Pierre as its May, 2010 cover story.
