For Wendy Hammers real life begins at 50. To celebrate, she’s created her first one-woman show in over a decade, called ripe. “It’s about the last ten years of my life,” Hammers said. “I got divorced. I raised a child. I reinvented myself and I’m 50 now. I found my true love at age 48,” she said.
Hammers, who is also the creator of the popular spoken words show called Tasty Words™ said ripe is not the kind of show that’s often seen in Hollywood. “It takes a while to become ripe, to become seasoned so you’re ready to burst, you’re ready to bloom,” Hammers said. “I feel like I’m at the greatest place in my life that I’ve ever been. Most people in our culture, they think that they hit 50 and they might as well put one foot in the grave. And it’s so backwards,” she said.
Audiences can expect to see Hammers moving as well as speaking in ripe. “I developed all of the material through dancing and moving my body and writing out of that,” she said. “So I was like, the butt wants to talk, my breasts want to talk, my elbow wants to talk and that’s how I created the stories,” Hammers said.
