Thousands of people are cheering in the streets of Rio De Janeiro today, is it Carnival? No, the celebration came as a result of the recent announcement they will be host to 2016 Summer Olympics. Even heavy hitters like Oprah,Michelle Obama, and President Obama were not enough to sway the Olympic panel for voting in Chicago's favor.
As the words words "Rio de Janeiro" were announced the winner in Copenhagen, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and soccer superstar Pele both celebrated. The residents called Cariocas, (Rio citizens) raised their arms celebrating, waving flags and hugging each other in the streets. The huge gathering is expected to last through the night and could reach 100,000 people.
Rio beat Madrid, Chicago, and Tokyo, finally winning the chance to host the event after failed attempts in 1936, 2004 and 2012. They are the first South American nation to host the games.
