There are two Republicans candidates for running for the Senate seat vacated by Gloria Negrete-McCloud when she won election to the House of Representatives. Those candidates are city of Ontario mayor Paul Leon and city of Pomona Planning Commission chairman Kenny Coble.
Neither Republican received the endorsement of San Bernardino County Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, Janice Rutherford, or San Bernardino County District Attorney, Mike Ramos. Both Rutherford and Ramos are Republicans with a history of endorsing Democrats.
In this instance Rutherford and Ramos endorsed Auditor/Controller/Tax Collector Larry Walker, a liberal-leaning Democrat. In 2012 both endorsed James Ramos for county supervisor over incumbent and fiscally conservative Neil Derry.
Mike Ramos is a former Democrat who switched parties when he decided to run for office in San Bernardino County, which was at that time strongly Republican. Rutherford is a lifetime bureaucrat who most recently became known for quashing free speech and public access at Board of Supervisors meetings.
Both Ramos and Rutherford are considered Rinos—Republican in name only—for their endorsement records. Both are up for re-election in June 2014.
