Ring of Honor Wrestling announced on Dec. 28 that they have reached an agreement with free agent AJ Styles to return for the company's next television taping. According to the website, Styles will return to wrestle Roderick Strong.
The return of AJ Styles is a big deal for ROH Wrestling, as Styles was one of the first wrestlers to work for the company when they first started in 2002. Soon, Styles chose to wrestle for TNA Impact Wrestling full time and has been with them for over a decade until his contact expired earlier this month.
His match when he returns to Ring of Honor has a built in storyline. Roderick Strong has just started a new stable with BJ Whitmer and Jimmy Jacobs, a group built on the fact they have been with Ring of Honor for a decade while others have come and gone. With Styles one of the men who left, and is now coming back for a special appearance, he is the exact type of wrestler who they are railing against.
The TV taping will also feature the return of Chris Hero to Ring of Honor after a two year stay in the WWE developmental system. Hero will take on "Mr. Wrestling" Kevin Steen in his first match back with Ring of Honor. Last time Hero was on ROH television was the first ever nationwide show after Sinclair picked them up.
The show also features an appearance by WWE Hall of Fame legend Rowdy Roddy Piper and will kick off the 2014 Top Prospect tournament. The taping takes place on Jan. 4, 2014, and tickets are available at the ROH Wrestling website.
