There was a time, back in the '90s, when "the slap heard around the world" referred to a tiff between two cast members on The Real World Seattle. If you say that phrase today, it might be assumed that you're talking about Rihanna and her ex-boyfriend/convicted felon, Chris Brown.
The end of the relationship was played out in front of the media, and the domestic violence Brown was prone to commit was revealed as well. Rihanna has stayed mum about the entire situation, as she had a right to do, choosing instead to focus on work. It could be because she's ready to move on, or because she's promoting her new album (out Nov. 23), but either way, Rihanna is finally talking about the combative relationship that made headlines.
She spoke to Glamour magazine, who named her one of Glamour's Women of the Year 2009, about the people in her life who have helped her through the ordeal, and about how domestic violence is always the dirty little secret that women are embarrassed, ashamed, and afraid to share. And when asked about the police photo (taken of her the night of Brown's arrest) that was leaked to the press, she was brutally honest:
It was humiliating; that is not a photo you would show to anybody. I felt completely taken advantage of. I felt like people were making it into a fun topic on the Internet, and it’s my life. I was disappointed, especially when I found out the photo was [supposedly leaked by] two women.
The Glamour interview also goes into happier places, with Rihanna talking about fashion, her music, and charity organizations. And she's even venturing into TV, doing interviews on Good Morning America and 20/20 later this week.
