On August 1 American rapper Eminem closed out the first night of the 2014 Lollapalooza Music Festival to what will undoubtedly be the biggest crowd during the entire three day music festival. During his hour and a half long set the rapper had two surprise guests. The first was rapper Royce da 5'9", and the second was pop star Rihanna.
Eminem began his Lollapalooza 2014 performance with the last verse of "Bad Guy" before jumping into "Square Dance". He packed in over 25 songs during his hour and a half long set. His stage production consisted of a large screen that visually changed to go with the theme of the song her was performing. Some other songs he performed during the first half of his set included "Rap God," "White America," and "The Way I Am". He also performed "Just Don't Give a F**k" and "Still Don't Give a F**k" back to back.
Midway through the set Royce da 5'9" came out and they performed "Fast Lane". Before Eminem's set began there was buzz backstage Rihanna was going to perform with him that night. No one had officially seen her, but on July 30 she had been in Michigan with Eminem practicing for their co-headlining "Monster" tour.
After Royce da 5'9" departed the stage a mansion was shown on the giant screen behind Eminem. All of a sudden Rihanna popped out from backstage and began singing the chorus of their single " Love the Way You Lie". The crowd went absolutely wild. The singer looked stunning in a black and white dress paired with a light-weight jacket that kept falling off her shoulders.
After "Love the Way You Lie" Rihanna stuck around and performed "The Monster" and "Stan" with Eminem. Once Rihanna departed the stage, Eminem went into his song "Sing for the Moment". Other songs he performed during the second half of his set included "Like Toy Soldiers," "Berzerk" and his verse of the collaboration song "Forever".
Right before going into "My Name Is" and "The Real Slim Shady" Eminem asked the Lollapalooza crowd if they wanted to hear songs from when he was messed up on pills. Eminem closed out his set with "Not Afraid," "Without Me," and "Lose Yourself".
Overall, it was an energetic, and visually appealing performance. There was only one major problem. Every so often a large bang shot off, and the stage went completely dark. It was part of the stage production but it was very startling, and and good portion of the crowd jump in surprise.
