Rihanna was honored at the 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards in New York City on Monday night and stunned onlookers with a barely-there sheer gown. Although Rihanna’s outfit was encrusted with more than 200,000 Swarovski crystals, (a sponsor of the event held at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center) every inch of the 26-year-old fashionista was visible beneath her ensemble.

Rihanna’s glittering fishnet dress was “audacious, even jaw-dropping or button-pushing,” a fact proclaimed by the famed Vogue Editor, Anna Wintour, who presented Rihanna with the 2014 Fashion Icon Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, according to Adam Selman designed RiRi’s ultra-sheer gown with matching elbow-length gloves and shimmering headscarf that left little to the imagination. She played nipple peek-a-boo with a pink stole and accented her derriere with thong underwear. Rihanna’s “rule-breaking” earned her the CFDA Fashion Award, which she discussed during her acceptance speech.

As a child growing up in Barbados, Rihanna admitted to not having “a lot of access to fashion.” Fashion helped the singer overcome insecurities and became her “defense mechanism.”

I can compensate for all my weaknesses with my fashion. There are rules, but rules are meant to be broken.

Celebrity fashion fans of Rihanna sang her praises before and after the CFDA Fashion Awards. Designer Zac Posen said the R&B singer “takes risks, marches to her own drum and knows what she likes,” and her “great appreciation for designers is the reason people love to dress her.” And Alexander Wang, also a CFDA nominee of the evening, chimed in with his love for “RiRi. She’s fearless. She has guts. Even in sweatpants, she owns it!” Well, maybe not when Rihanna wore the doobie wrap to the 2013 AMAs, but fashion is forgiving, and as she said above, rules are meant to be broken.

Hosted by director John Waters, the CFDA Fashion Awards honored the who’s who in fashion, with a slew of stylistic celebrities in attendance, such as Lupita Nyong’o, who has received accolades for her own red carpet fashion choices. Lupita presented to Altuzzara for the womenswear award and TV twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen received the CFDA accessory award.
