Have you seen the reviews for the Rihanna-designed fashion line of "ready-to-wear" clothing that's set to hit the River Island stores the first week of March? They're not good. But, then, many admitted they didn't attend the show thinking they would overwhelmed with the R&B singer's fashion vision. But many didn't think they'd be so underwhelmed, either. And one critic held nothing back, calling the designs "hideous" and "porny."
Rihanna's first fashion line debuted at the London Fashion Week on Saturday (Feb. 16) and it didn't take long for the detractors to put their displeasure in print. The most scathing was from Tom Sykes at Daily Beast, who likened the singer's presentation to a "horror show."
"The clothes were hideous and without an ounce of panache or style between them," he wrote.
And he wasn't the only one that found the Rihanna-inspired clothes rather uninspiring. Rebecca Adams at Huffington Post listed a few things that went wrong with the designs: a red one-piece "Baywatch" bathing suit throwback, most designs were a "wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen," Rihanna was only the inspiration for the designs (which were actualized by Adam Selman as Rihanna phoned them in -- oh, and emailed ideas as well), and Rihanna was an hour late for her own nine-minute fashion show.
Yes, apparently the "Only Girl (In The World)" lives her own lyrics...
Pedestrian TV was also bored with the "basic" fare, writing: "The clothes were unapologetically RiRi and her Rihanna Navy will lap it up regardless of design merit or innovation..."
There's an entire rundown of weak, somewhat complimentary, and harsh responses to Rihanna's show at Billboard.
But were her fashions that uninspired? All it takes is a couple of glances to see that there wasn't much effort put into the pieces (but by far the worst outfit was the black mesh -- without bra -- and skirt ensemble). But then that's what happens when you have someone literally phoning in their ideas instead of taking a hands-on interest in a project.
