Rihanna fashion collection: Singer debuts edgy clothing line

Rihanna has launched a serious fashion collection for high-street retailer River Island, which debuted on Saturday, as a part of London Fashion Week. The pop singer pulled her own edgy – and just a bit raunchy – style into the look, reports Reuters on Saturday, Feb. 16.

"I loved it - it's so Rihanna, it's got Rihanna's name all over it," gushed a Los Angeles model, Tolula Adeyemi. Others in the crowd were just as enthusiastic. The tiered catwalk put the models through their paces, as they stopped to be admired at each of five stations. The offerings showed off midriff-baring mesh tops and denim-on-denim tops with slouchy jeans. There were yellow shift dresses, and others slit to the thigh, generally monochrome in hue.

Rihanna made sure her Barbados roots were showing, as well as her unique, dressed-down style. This is not the singer’s first foray into the fashion world. In 2011, she teamed with Armani for a line of super-sexy jeans.

And in a world where every celebrity seems to think she – or he – can be a designer, this effort may just work. The clothes are affordable and definitely A-list stylish. But some industry leaders warn that launching the moderately-priced line in the haute couture atmosphere of fashion week, may turn away the very customers River Island intends to attract.

It’s a risk and an investment, but Rihanna’s look is one that always turns heads. Now if that kind of style can just be packaged and sold, the retailer will have a hit.
