Rihanna, Bruno Mars are the most-pirated artists of 2013

When it comes to illegally downloading music, sites like BitTorrent, a peer-to-peer file sharing source to transfer large files, are just as prevalent these days as streaming tools and digital retailers. As far as which artists were affected most in 2013, data analysis from Musicmetric indicates that Bruno Mars, whose most recent album is "Unorthodox Jukebox," released end of 2012, and Rihanna, with her chart-topping set "Unapologetic," top this year's Most-Pirated list.

To put things into perspective, Mars' most recent record has moved 641,000 copies in the legal market as of the tracking week ending Dec. 22, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Meanwhile, 514,000 digital units have been pirated through the popular sourcing site. His 2010-released "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" accounts for another 126,000 imprints moved across the glob illegally this year.

BitTorrent's breakdown of musical traffic is 70% albums and 30% tracks, as Billboard reports. While piracy is an unfortunate risk with the company, some artists (like Death Grips and Pretty Lights) use the site to offer their music for free.

Musicmetric EVP Daniel Savage notes that piracy has been on a steep decline in recent years. He explains, "Previous research that we've done indicates that the increased availability of music via streaming is a contributing factor."

On the year-end Top 20, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Eminem and One Direction all launched new records in the past 12 months, earning them each a spot on the tally.
