The long-awaited return of the USFL, which played its last game back in 1985, took another step toward happening on Wednesday.
“EndZoneSports Management has purchased the rights (to the league),” said Michael Dwyer in a phone conversation Wednesday evening.
Dwyer, who is the founder of the new USFL, will remain part of the league going forward.
“I’m now a consultant and have the rights to Los Angeles and will be the team owner for the Los Angeles franchise.”
Previous reports have had former NFL quarterback Sean Salisbury as the head coach of the Los Angeles team. That information could not be confirmed on Wednesday.
"Hearing that the USFL is coming back is like getting a phone call from your college love, stirring up feelings of excitement. I feel 20 again!" said Mike Damergis, author of The USFL - The Rebel League The NFL Didn't Respect But Feared.
According to The Morning Call, the league hopes to begin play in the spring of 2013 and team locations are expected to be announced this summer.
"The (USFL) logos were way cooler than the NFL teams. The (Michigan) Panthers and (Los Angeles) Express were the best. The awesome '80s are back," added Damergis, who is Media Director, Adjunct Prof. at Iona College.
More information about the new USFL can be found on the league’s updated website.
