Bunch of issues in the news:
I. Two gay high school girls had a picture in their school yearbook removed by the school adminstration. The reason given is that it was too much of a display of affection. Maybe, or maybe not, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it was because they are a gay couple.
II. Remember Bill O'Reilly? Well he implied about a Colorado legislator who opposed a version of "Jessica's Law" ( a law that deals with the sexual assault of minors) was because the legislator is gay and supportative of same sex marriage and medical marijuana. This is not the worse thing O'Reilly has ever said about gays. He once directly compared same sex marriage with Al Qaida.
III. You ever heard of Sean Harris, he is a North Carolina Christian pastor who urged parents to punch their gay children, yes more Christian values.
IV. I was listening to a conservative talk show host on the radio and she stated that the U.S. Supreme Court should strike down regulations, such as on pollution. So much so for the "judicial restraint" conservatives always says judges/justices should have. I guess that only means judicial restraints when it comes to laws banning gay sex, such as the Lawrence v. Texas decision.
V. An Idaho woman was ordered by a judge, because of a drug offense, to attend a Pentacostal program, a program which was very religious in nature. When she objected after attending a session, the judge sent her back to prison. So much for religious freedom, at least when you get an evangelical judge at your trial.
VI. I wrote a letter to the editor in the local paper decrying God on our currency and a person commented, God was on our currency. Some people think that because something exists, like God on our money, is a defense of that thing, like God being on the money. This is called of course, a circular argument.
In another case, a person commented when I wrote about vandalism of atheist billboards that vandalism of billboards is free speech. This is how intolerant the Christian rightwing is, they think they have a right to commit all the vandalism against atheist billboards that they do across the nation.
Finally, if you wish to oppose the nuttiness of the religious right-wing, I urge you, like I, to become a member of the pro gay rights Human Rights Commission. Or, maybe you have a family member who is gay, well then there is PFLAG. Or, join humanist organizations such as the American Humanist Association or Center for Free Inquiry
