Riesling wines are invading Portland this weekend

Riesling may be the most misunderstood wine on the planet. Because winemakers have the ability to make it both sweet and dry (and everything in-between), it can be challenging for wine lovers to find the style they like. So, for anyone who wants to learn more about this versatile grape or is already a diehard Riesling drinker, this Saturday’s Riesling Invasion is an event you must attend.

With 39 wineries pouring over 100 different Rieslings, wine lovers will have the chance to taste the entire gamut of the Riesling spectrum. The fact is that it’s not often that this many Rieslings are opened and poured at the same time. Winery representatives and winemakers will be on hand to answer questions and explain the styles they choose to make.

Says Janie Brooks, of Brooks Winery in Amity, “Riesling Invasion gives us an opportunity to gather and celebrate Riesling, to change stereotypes associated with Riesling, and to connect with other Riesling fanatics looking for the next level of acidity.

Wine lovers will be treated to riffs performed by local all-winemaker band Vin Halen and can chat with author Stuart Pigott, who’s newly published book, “Best White Wine on Earth: The Riesling Story” will be available for purchase. In his book, Pigott digs deep into the history and stories of Riesling makers from around the globe.

“Finally, the Riesling Invasion has arrived in Oregon and is clearing out all that Pinot noir fog! This invasion is actually innovation, giving Oregon its first great dry white wines” says author Stuart Pigott.

Olympic Provisions (brats), Steve Jones (cheese), Xico (Mexican style grilled corn) and Andrea Slonecker's Pretzel Stand (an unusual pairing with Riesling) will be offering food available to purchase. Come eat, drink and learn why Riesling is the most versatile food wine by experiencing it yourself.
