The Ridgecrest shooting spree was like a scene pulled right out of a movie script, as the shooter led police on a car chase for an hour that was full of surprises for the police. The bizarre incident started when a police officer got a call on his cell phone from a man threatening to wreak havoc, according to L.A. Now on Oct. 25.
The officer was at a shooting scene when that call came in. The police were at a house where a woman was shot to death and a man was suffering from “multiple gun-shot wounds.” The caller said he wanted to go to the police station and “kill all the officers, but they had too many guns.”
Apparently the man who made the phone call was known to police because about two hours later a police officer spotted the man’s vehicle leaving the city and he tried to pull him over. This is where police started to give chase to the suspect in what turned out to be a rolling shoot-out with devastating consequences.
Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said the officers gave chase to the man as he drove south on Highway 395. The suspect open fire on the police and he also shot at cars randomly on the highway, using both a shotgun and handgun.
He shot at other cars an estimated 10-12 times during this pursuit. Then the trunk of the man’s car popped open exposing two people in the trunk, a man and a woman. It was then police changed the pursuit tactics.
After following the man for about another seven miles, he pulled over. This is when he started firing into the trunk of his car through the backseat. Knowing that there were two people in that trunk, Police opened fire on the suspect, killing him.
The people inside the trunk of the car had gunshot wounds, but it is not known exactly when they suffered the injuries. The wounded victims were airlifted to an area hospital. There is no news on who they are or the extent of their injuries.
While the suspect’s name was not released, Youngblood said they knew the man and the man knew the police.
At the time of the police conference, it was still not known how many victims were shot or the extent of the injuries of the people who suffered gunshot wounds. This suspect gave police “several different crime scenes” to investigate.
