A horse became unhinged and spooked when an unleashed dog ran at him, barking. The animals met on the bridle path at Goddard Park in the equestrian area on Saturday morning, Dec. 21. The rider became unseated from the frightened horse and was injured.

The rider, Celia Schnacky, is a chemistry teacher at East Greenwich High School.

Her husband, Paul Hoffman, spoke to the media and informed that Schnacky has extensive injuries from the accident. She remains in the hospital after emergency surgery for multiple injuries including a compound fracture of the clavicle, pneumothorax, fractured ribs, fractured mandible, and fractured scapula. Schnacky remains in the trauma intensive care unit.

The accident occurred in Goddard Park around 11:00 a.m. The owner of the dog split right after the incident with the dog, a pit bull mix.

Hoffman notes that most people do not realize that horses are skittish and spooky, especially around loud noises, barking dogs and sudden movements. It is always important to be wary around such large animals and dogs should be restrained.
