“Ride Along” wins the weekend box office, “I, Frankenstein” flops

It was another big weekend for the comedy starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube. Ride Along is definitely 2014’s first certified hit. It is followed very closely by the military action movie Lone Survivor. Meanwhile, Disney’s monster hit, Frozen, continues to show up in the top ten and, this week, sneaked back into the top five. The movie has racked up huge numbers, not only at the theaters, but from people who have fallen in love with the soundtrack.

What this weekend was not is good for the new releases. The Aaron Eckhart starring vehicle, I, Frankenstein, had all kinds of warning bells. The trailers showed special effects that were, at best, laughable. The movie had no advanced screenings for critics, which is always a very bad sign. Thus, the movie opened to dismal numbers this weekend. However, some are saying the movie was almost tailor-made to flop domestically, but do well overseas, so the movie may still recoup its budget.

The Vanessa Hudgens film, Gimme Shelter, came out this weekend with some buzz attached to to the intensely dramatic role. However, critics savaged the film as over-handed and cliched with Hudgens' performance often cited as a major problem. The film did not open in the top ten.

Here are the top ten movies from the weekend of January 25-25, 2014 with weekend gross in millions for each movie:

10. Devil’s Due - $2.7 (total: $12.8)
9. The Wolf of Wall Street - $5 (total: $98)
8. August: Osage County - $5.04 (total: $26.5)
7. American Hustle - $7.1 (total: $127)
6. I, Frankenstein - $8.2
5. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit - $8.8 (total: $30.1)
4. Frozen - $9 (total: $347.8)
3. The Nut Job - $12.3 (total: $40.2)
2. Lone Survivor - $12.6 (total: $93.6)
1. Ride Along - $21.1 (total: $75.4)
