'Ride Along' is No. 1 at U.S. box office; 'The Nut Job' is No. 3

Universal Pictures' "Ride Along" debuted at No. 1 spot at the U.S. and Canadian box office for the weekend ending Jan. 19, 2014. According to a Box Office Mojo report published on Jan. 19, "Ride Along" had $41.2 million in ticket sales for the weekend ending Jan. 19, 2014. Ice Cube and Kevin Hart star in "Ride Along," which is a cop action-comedy. "Ride Along" now holds the record for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a movie that opened in January.

Three other movies opened in wide release in the U.S. and Canada on Jan. 17, 2014: Open Road Films' animated comedy "The Nut Job," which came in at No. 3 with $20.6 million for its opening weekend; Paramount Pictures' action thriller "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" (No. 4, with $17.2 million); and 20th Century Fox's horror flick "Devil's Due," which debuted at No. 7 with $8.5 million.

According to Box Office Mojo, here are the Top 5 movies in the U.S. and Canada for the weekend ending Jan. 19, 2014:

1. "Ride Along" — $41.2 million

2. "Lone Survivor" — $23.2 million

3. "The Nut Job" — $20.6 million

4. "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" — $17.2 million

5. "Frozen" — $15 million

And here are the opening-weekend box-office numbers for the movies that opened in limited release on Jan. 17, 2014:

  • "Like Father, Like Son" — $16,500 from two theaters
  • "American Mustang" — $8,100 from one theater
  • "Life of a King" — $4,300 from 16 theaters (also premiered on VOD on Jan. 17, 2014)
