'Ride Along' is No. 1 at U.S. box office; 'That Awkward Moment' debuts at No. 3

For the third weekend in a row, Universal Pictures' "Ride Along" was No. 1 at the U.S. and Canadian box office for the weekend ending Feb. 2, 2014. According to a Box Office Mojo report published on Feb. 2, "Ride Along" had $12.3 million in ticket sales for the weekend ending Feb. 2, 2014. Ice Cube and Kevin Hart star in "Ride Along," which is a cop action-comedy. "Ride Along" holds the record for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a movie that opened in January.

The other two movies that opened in wide release in the U.S. and Canada on Jan. 31, 2014, were Focus Features' romantic comedy "That Awkward Moment" (starring Zac Efron, Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan), which debuted at No. 3, with $9 million. Paramount Pictures' romantic drama "Labor Day" (starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin) debuted at No. 6, with only $5.3 million in ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada for the movie's opening weekend.

According to Box Office Mojo, here are the Top 5 movies in the U.S. and Canada for the weekend ending Feb. 2, 2014:

1. "Ride Along" — $12.3 million

2. "Frozen" — $9.3 million

3. "That Awkward Moment" — $9 million

4. "The Nut Job" — $7.6 million

5. "Lone Survivor" — $7.1 million

And here are the opening-weekend box-office numbers for the movies that opened in limited release on Jan. 31, 2014:

  • "Tim's Vermeer" — $57,900 from four theaters
  • "12 O'Clock Boys" — $51,500 from 21 theaters
