'Ride Along' is No. 1 at U.S. box office; 'I, Frankenstein' bombs at No. 6

For the second weekend in a row, Universal Pictures' "Ride Along" was No. 1 at the U.S. and Canadian box office for the weekend ending Jan. 26, 2014. According to a Box Office Mojo report published on Jan. 26, "Ride Along" had $21.2 million in ticket sales for the weekend ending Jan. 26, 2014. Ice Cube and Kevin Hart star in "Ride Along," which is a cop action-comedy. "Ride Along" holds the record for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a movie that opened in January.

The only other movie that opened in wide release in the U.S. and Canada on Jan. 24, 2014, was Lionsgate's horror flick "I, Frankenstein" (starring Aaron Eckhart), which bombed. "I, Frankenstein" debuted at No. 6, with only $8.3 million in ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada for the movie's opening weekend.

According to Box Office Mojo, here are the Top 5 movies in the U.S. and Canada for the weekend ending Jan. 26, 2014:

1. "Ride Along" — $21.2 million

2. "Lone Survivor" — $12.6 million

3. "The Nut Job" — $12.3 million

4. "Frozen" — $9 million

5. "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" — $8.8 million

And here are the opening-weekend box-office numbers for the movies that opened in limited release on Jan. 24, 2014:

  • "Gimme Shelter" — $721,000 from 385 theaters
  • "Gloria" — $58,800 from three theaters
  • "Visitors" — $10,700 from one theater
