Nelson dreaded flying and didn’t care for bus travel either. The band that he was in took a private plane that seemed to have a history of mechanical problems. Many witnesses claim that his plane caught fire and was aflame before it crashed to the ground.
It was a sad day in music history! “Seven of the nine occupants were killed: Nelson and his companion, Helen Blair, bass guitarist Patrick Woodward, drummer Rick Intveld, keyboardist Andy Chapin, guitarist Bobby Neal, and road manager/soundman Donald Clark Russell. Pilots Ken Ferguson and Brad Rank escaped via cockpit windows, though Ferguson was severely burned.”
Some of the songs that you may remember were: “Hello Mary Lou”, “Garden Party”, “Dream Lover”, “Lonesome Town” and “Fools Rush In”.
Jackson Arts and Entertainment is also hosting a special event titled “Ricky Nelson Remembered” to be held on January 19 at the Duling Hall at 7:30 p.m. located at 622 Duling Avenue in Jackson, Miss. Cost per ticket is $25.00 and are available through Ticketmaster.
Come one and all and remember a great music talent – Ricky Nelson!
