Ricky Martin is out, proud and living happily as a dad of twin sons. The “La Vida Loca” singer feels none of that would’ve been possible if he didn’t reveal his sexuality to the world for the first time back in 2010. The Latin sensation found the moment so rewarding that he wishes he could come out again. He talked about his experience in an interview with KIIS FM on Thursday.

The former “General Hospital” actor and current judge of Australia’s version of “The Voice” said he found his coming out moment to be very therapeutic because of the support he received and a huge weight was lifted from his shoulders. As a pop star and actor, Martin remained silent as rumors surfaced about his sexuality, but the day came when he finally knocked the closet door down and no longer hid who he was.

He told KIIS FM, “It really feels amazing and then when it happens you realize all your fears were in your head. The amount of support I received…from the media, obviously my fans and my family was amazing. Unfortunately, society just pushes us to believe that our feelings are evil.”

Just as coming out made him more liberated, the birth of his twin sons played a key role in him coming out. When they were born through a surrogate mother in 2008, Martin wanted them to know the truth about their dad and be proud of their dad when they grow older. He said I the interview, “when I held them in my arms for the first time…it’s about honesty and transparency and I want my kids to grow up in an open household where they don’t have to lie about their daddy.”

The Latin singer realizes the time will come when his boys go to school and will be asked about their dad. He wants them to be able to openly talk about their dad with pride, which he feels will send a positive message that “it doesn’t matter who he is or where he comes from or what he’s made of.”
