Singer Rick Springfield was arrested Friday in Los Angeles on a bench warrant from a DUI court appearance that should have happened back in February. It seems he failed to show up for his court date, ignored a few fines, and blew off the alcohol education program stemming from a drunk driving arrest, reports TMZ on Friday, March 8. Shades of Lindsay Lohan.
Rick Springfield, who was a top pop singer back in the 80s, was released as soon as his attorney showed up to make a new deal. It’s good to have a lawyer on call, if you intend to play fast and loose with the court system. The original offense was back in May of 2011, when Rick was pulled over in Malibu, in his Corvette. The cops smelled alcohol. Rick Springfield nearly arrested then – for making death threats if his classic car was towed – but he was doing ok until he blew off the court date. Then the system rolled slightly faster.
Fortunately, Rick still had his cell with him, so he could update Facebook from the Lost Hills sheriff station. Rick posted a new status on his Facebook page right on the scene: “I didn't know that I was supposed appear in court a few weeks ago. It was to do with the old DUI charge and it's been cleared up and I am free to go.”
Yes, but not quite. Under the new agreement, Rick still has to finish the alcohol education program. At least it isn’t one of those high-cost rehab stints. And he has to pay the fines he ignored, plus penalties. DUI never comes cheap.
