Rick Santorum: Representing the few good men

This morning's news cycle found the political pundits being schooled by regular Midwestern voters in three caucus events last night. The media has often questioned whether we really needed a "Good Man" as President or just a man who can solve America's problems. They have suggested that there are not really any “Good Men” left in our country, anyway, nor do voters care about moral issues. Minnesota, Missouri, and Colorado all enthusiastically begged to differ as they answered, "Yes, America is still looking for a few good men!"

Rick Santorum made a clean sweep of all three Republican caucus races last night. The former senator from Pennsylvania has long been a voice for traditional Judeo-Christian moral values that have become almost extinct in our politics and government.  He unashamedly expresses his faith in God and his love and respect for his wife and their seven children, one of whom who is a special-needs child.

Those who say that a commitment to a marriage and family has no bearing on a man's ability to govern seem to have a point until you take a close look at the women and children around you. When you see the emotional, financial, and even physical pain caused by a husband and father's lack of commitment, the perspective on the issue changes. Regardless of how you view his politics, it is hard to deny that Rick Santorum is a good, honest, family man who loves America, and it appears that America still find this to be important.

You also cannot deny that Santorum is an honest broker in American politics; you know what you are getting with him. He is forthright about his views, whether you like them or not. Even when his views are described as being so conservative that they could easily render him unelectable, he will tell you what he believes is right.

Rick Santorum does not construct his answers or opinions to fit the polls, probably much to the chagrin of his political handlers. If he were motivated by political expediency, he would NEVER have continued to express his much-criticized Pro-Life beliefs.

The news media ridicules the fact that anyone would actually vote for someone who was passionate about moral issues. Rick Santorum has continually been classed as a "Conviction Candidate," as though someone who stands on certain moral platforms could never be taken seriously by the American electorate. Really? Ask Colorado, Missouri, and Minnesota about that!

There are many ways that we can determine a man's stature and fitness for office, and many voices still insist that a personal moral compass is not necessary. They explain that being able to get the job done is enough.  Have we become so Machiavellian in our country?

In honor of Black History Month, let's remember how Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. thought a man should be judged:

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
