Rick Santorum: People die because of bad decisions, not lack of health insurance

In the United States today, nearly 50 million people don't have health insurance. Many others have part-time or discount plans that do little to help them if they are put into a situation where they need the coverage. The poverty level has continued to grow and many of those people are young children or seniors who need the help. In 2009, President Obama passed the Affordable Health Care Act that will cover nearly everyone in the United States. The issue with the health care plan is that because of the obstruction from the Republicans in congress, the public option was never a reality. Americans will have to purchase insurance, but it will still go to private companies. Those who make less than four times the poverty level will get government assistance, but the health care companies will still be making a giant profit.

Americans across the country need health care and many are dying because of it, but there are some who think that the lack of health care isn't the reason. Republican presidential candidate, Rick Santorum, believes that people are dying, not because of the lack of health care, but because of bad choices. At a campaign event in Sioux City, Iowa, Santorum answered a question that was asked to him about Americans responsibility towards the uninsured who are dying because of lack of insurance.

Rick Santorum: "The answer is not what can we do to prevent deaths because of a lack of health insurance. There’s... I reject that number completely, that people die in America because of lack of health insurance....People die in America because people die in America. And people make poor decisions with respect to their health and their healthcare"
Rick Santorum hit the nail on the head in reflecting the conservative stance on responsibility and taking care of others. In the mindset of a conservative, if you don't do it yourself than it's your fault. If you don't have insurance and get sick, ask a church and if they can't help you then oh well. Conservatives turn a blind eye to the fact that not everyone is in the position to buy health insurance, or grew up with the proper education or in an environment where they could succeed. We should be looking out for others because it's the moral thing to do. The government should set up a system that rewards success ,but also gives everyone a fair chance to succeed. When a party claims to be the party of moral and religious values, they sure know how to hide it.
