Rick Huxley of Beatles' chart rival Dave Clark Five dies (Photos)

Rick Huxley, the bass player for the Dave Clark Five who were the Beatles' rivals in the pop charts during the years of Beatlemania, has died at 72 from emphysema, reports the BBC.

His death leaves only two original members, drummer Dave Clark and guitarist Lenny Davidson, still alive. Keyboardist and lead singer Mike Smith died in 2008. Saxophonist Denny Payton died in 2006. .

Huxley was among the three band members with Davidson and Clark who attended when the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.

The group was best known for Mike Smith's Paul McCartney looks and piercing vocals, Payton's growling sax and Clark's echoed drum sound. Their rivalry with the Beatles was well established. Magazines published during 1964 asked which group was better. (See slide show.)

The DC5 had 17 top 40 Billboard hits between 1964 and 1967, seven in 1964 alone. "Over and Over" was their sole No. 1 hit in the U.S., coming in 1965. Their first four top 40 hits – “Glad All Over,” “Bits and Pieces,” “Do You Love Me” and “Can't You See That She's Mine,” happened in consecutive months between March and June of 1964.
