One of the most important and most talked about issues is the Richmond Flying Squirrels ballpark on the Boulevard. Council is expected to make a decision on buying The Diamond property, owned by the Richmond Metropolitan Authority (RMA).
If bought, the city would lease it back to the RMA for $1 a month, until Council decides what to do about a new ballpark, and more importantly, where it will be located. There is a considerable amount of speculation regarding the buy-back of the Diamond property. Many are left wondering if this is not a first step toward Mayor Jones' attempt to slip in a ballpark in Shockoe Bottom.
City Council is expected to vote on an ordinance recognizing same-sex marriages. This will be a symbolic gesture, seeing as Virginia does not recognize same-sex marriages. At the present time, the city cannot give any marriage benefits to gay employees. This could all change if and when Virginia changes the law at the state level.
It is not known at this time what other issues may be brought before Council, but it's sure to be an interesting meeting.
