Richmond, Virginia anticipates a busy sports year in 2013: and I'll tell you about it now because I've been tracking a list of increasingly interesting subjects. That's the thrill of sports after all: the interest increases as the event unfolds.
Sometimes the event has a face as in Eric Maynor who played hoops at VCU and was traded to the Portland Trailblazers this week...the Portland sports scene has now become a blip on my radar screen. Eric will play his first game today, February 24, 2013, against the Boston Celtics at the Rose Garden in Portland. Larry Sanders, who was Eric's teammate at VCU, has drawn high praise from everyone who appreciates his defensive shot-blocking prowess: he plays for the Milwaukee Bucks.
Justin Verlander, who played college baseball at Old Dominion University and now is a star with the Detroit Tigers, is one of the most dominant pitchers in the Major Leagues: his 30th birthday is coming up soon.
The Washington Redskins are a story that will be huge as NFL training camp approaches: with the Redskins training at the emerging facility just off Broad Street in Richmond, behind the Science Museum, there will be huge buzz there this Summer, the Redskins Summer of 2013. I'll be there every day looking for stories as many of you will be as a giddy fan watching the stars showing their skills.
Richmond International Raceway is within earshot of my house and they'll have a buzz that only NASCAR brings: local driver Denny Hamlin will be a story for his past and upcoming performances.
The VCU's men's hoops team is shining in the 2012-13 season: their new affiliation with the A-10 has brought them more prominence than their previous affiliation with the Colonial Athletic Association did; also, they look to be a serious player in the A-10 postseason tournament that will be played in the new Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, New York in March.
The San Francisco Giants--the World Series champs again in 2012--are a story in Richmond since the Richmond Flying Squirrels are their Double A farm team. 2012 Flying Squirrels star pitcher Chris Heston is on the 2012 Giants 40-man roster: I'll tell you about his progress in making the Giants opening day squad.
That's a lot of stuff: there is, as always, a story that hasn't emerged yet that will surprise me and you as well...check out the exciting Richmond sports scene with me in 2013!
