Richard Simmons appeared on Friday’s episode of “The Dr. Oz Show” recharged and rediscovered. The ageless fitness king discussed his bullied youth with Dr. Oz and detailed a childhood torment that he turned around through three simple words.
Richard Simmons has regained the title of fitness guru. Thanks to the Internet, he has found a brand new following of fitness fans in a generation of young YouTube users. The 65-year-old physical fitness expert visited Dr. Oz on Friday and explained how through honesty, his valued message of hope and hard work has hit home for young adults in a new way.
I've never lied to them. I never said losing weight was going to be easy. I never said it was going to be quick. I never asked them to take what I used to take, laxatives and throwing up and stuff. I'm very honest and blunt. I call people every day. I say to them, ‘whiners get big behinders’. You know what I'm saying? You've got to, I just tell them like it is. You're divorced. You need to forgive your husband. You've lost a child. You lost your job. You're 400 pounds. Let's pick up the pieces of your broken puzzle, and let's put them back together, 'cause, you know, you're either going to live or die. You know, that's it.
In an emotional moment, Richard Simmons recounted a painful memory to Dr. Oz. He was bullied in elementary school due to his most personal struggle with obesity and explained how three words turned a child tormentor into a trusted protector.
There was a guy that used to hit me with a baseball bat back in grammar school until I hit the floor. And one day I just took it out of his hand and said, ‘I love you.’ His father had fled, and his mother was an alcoholic. From that point forward, if anyone said anything to me, he would just pick them up, he was 6'1", and just move them to the side.
Richard Simmons can be seen on Friday, October 11 on “The Dr. Oz Show.” Check local listings for airtimes to hear how he continues to change lives and make people healthy.
