Richard's story: Blind and deaf dog found abandoned in Apple Valley

See also

Richard is a thirteen-year-old Chow Chow abandoned on a California street in Apple Valley on Thunderbird and Rancherias Road. This terrified dog appears to be blind and possibly deaf; yes, he may have wandered away from his home, but if that was so - wouldn't he have been wearing identification?

Can there be anything more heartbreaking than for Richard to be sitting in a kennel at the high kill facility of Apple Valley Shelter?

Dogs and humans share the same basic senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. With Richard, his sight and hearing are gone, but his sense of smell warns him of a potential danger. What chance does a senior black dog have of finding someone who will rescue him?

A dog's sense of smell is calculated to be 100,000 more powerful than a human's sense of smell; compare 40 million olfactory receptors on a human versus two billion receptors for Richard.

Richard has not been evaluated by any volunteers yet, but he is available and listed for adoption. Please click here for more information about this senior dog, and how you may be the special person to bring the joy back into the life of an innocent dog deserted because he was just too old.
