He’s known as the King, has seven championships and 200 NASCAR wins but according to one church he’s heading straight for the fires of Hell.
While perusing the web I saw an article by Scott Coen on Masslive.com titled ‘New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is going to Hell’. Now I don’t know much but I do know that in New England you never, ever speak ill of the Patriots so I wondered if maybe Coen had gone off the deep end.
In reality Coen’s column had to do with a North Carolina church that has a list of sports figures they claim are destined to spend eternity in the fires of Hell for various reasons.
What caught my eye though was a reference to none other then Richard Petty. I visited the church’s site and sure enough about three quarters of the way down was the smiling face wearing the familiar cowboy hat known and loved by millions of NASCAR fans. And below the picture was the church’s take on the sinful transgression that earned Petty his everlasting damnation.
According to the Amazing Grace Baptist Church Petty said, “Quick as my kids got out of the hospital, took 'em to the racetrack.”
They added ‘As a public figure Richard Petty makes it clear that the two most important things in his life are his family and his fans. “I don't particularly tell my guys to cheat. I just tell them not to get caught.” Richard Petty’s god is racing, not God Almighty.
He teaches that is okay in life to cheat just don’t get caught doing it. Is Richard Petty your idol?’
In fact Petty is my idol as he is to millions of NASCAR fans.
Obviously the church didn’t study the history of Petty family, who in reality are a devout God Fearing clan that used to refuse to accept the Bud Pole Award because years before the family patriarch Lee Petty laid down the law and refused to display alcohol sponsors.
After reading some of the sinful transgressions on the church’s website of not only Petty but of other athletes and sports personalities, I began to think maybe there was some alcohol involved there though.

Actually, it was the matriarch of the Petty family, Elizabeth (Lee's wife) who issued the no alcohol sponsorship edict.
And I agree with Big Henry...religous whack-jobs are religous whack-jobs regardless of their faith.
people like this is what people should stay away from. Before judging others you need to take a reality check an judge yourself, an your basically damming yourself to hell its not your place to call who goes to hell. Richard Petty has done so much in his life an for other people. If you get your facts straight Richard has a place called Victory Junction that is for meantally delayed people that makes them feel loved an welcomed unlike schools an everywhere else. It has made a difference in so many lives to have that place especially for my brother, an his family means alot an Richard is a kind hearted man ive met him an he has inspired me an my life so you need to grow up an take a reality dose of God cause your not him.
an another thing there are so many people in this world that are the same way maybe he wasn grown up around church or something couldve happened that made him distant from church he is not the only one. He took after his father an thats what every little boy dreams of is to make his father proud an be what his father would say to him "im proud" Just because you give these facts means nothing to anyone your just waiting your time an making people like us wish people like you would leave people alone an get saved an stay out of peoples lives an make us realize people like you are fake, an have no meaning in life except to criticise other people its wrong.
