Richard Hamilton, a British pop artist whose friendship with Paul McCartney led to his brilliant design of the Beatles White Album cover, has died at age 89.

Hamilton, born in 1922, also designed the photo collage poster contained inside the album. One of his 1950s creations, a collage called “Just What Is It That Makes Today’s Homes So Different, So Appealing?," was considered to be a forerunner of pop art. He was called "The Father of Pop Art."

According to Bloomberg.com, Hamilton said he and McCartney first came in contact with each other after the Beatle visited his studio "every afternoon from about 2."
