Richard Belzer is leaving SVU. On Oct. 10, MSN reported that Belzer is retiring his character John Munch after 20 years. Really a staple on "Law & Order: SVU," Munch has been on a variety of television shows -- and his character has been quite popular -- but his final act is coming next week.
"In addition to 'Homicide' and 'SVU,' the character has appeared on 'Arrested Development,' 'The X-Files,' 'The Wire,' '30 Rock,' 'Mad About You' and more. Along the way, Belzer made TV history as the only actor to play the same character on ten different television shows," MSN reported.
Richard Belzer's SVU exit was surprising to many fans but his character's retirement has already been announced. Munch filled out his retirement paperwork and handed it in after a tough case had him feeling like it was his time to go.
It is unknown how involved his departure will be but things seem pretty straight forward. With Munch retiring, he'll just kind of go away without any strings or open ends. His dry humor will be particularly missed and his absence on the show will not go unnoticed. Are you sad that Munch is leaving? Do you think he will be missed?
Richard Belzer will leave SVU officially next Wed. at 9 p.m.
