Richard and Mayumi Heene, ‘balloon boy hoax’ parents were creatively sentenced Wednesday in a Colorado court. Richard Heene received 90 days in a work-release jail, and Mayumi Heene received 20 days of public service.

Both Richard and Mayumi Heene were placed on probation for four years, and will have to pay fines and restitution that will be calculated at a later date.

In quite a creative move, the judge ordered that the Heene’s are barred from earning any money from the balloon boy escapade while on probation. This would include a book deal or reality TV show, which was the Heene's reason for committing the balloon boy hoax in the first place.

Richard Heene must report to the work release jail by January 11 to begin serving his term. His wife will start her sentence after his is completed.

In October, the world watched as a small weather balloon floated across the Colorado sky and it was reported that a 6-year-old child might have been inside. As it turned out the boy was hiding inside the house, and the Heene’s created the hoax in hopes that they would land a spot on a reality TV show. Police and emergency officials were called out from all over the state in an attempt to rescue the balloon boy. Now the parents will have to pay restitution for the emergency officials.
