This Week in Atlanta
This Week in Atlanta
C MArtin

Of course this would be the week I am out of town. It seems almost every night this week has a must see show and when you get to the weekend the selections are flat out ridiculous. Here are a few highlights of things you probably do not want to miss.

TUESDAY – 6/10/14

The Joy Kills @ 529
Part of a multiple band line-up, Atlanta’s The Joy Kills will be rocking the intimate room in East Atlanta supporting their latest EP. Guitar laden in your face punk rock is their specialty and when playing live they are a force to be reckoned with. What better way to kick off a week than a Tuesday night of ear splitting music.

WEDNESDAY – 6/11/14

Kishi Bashi @ Terminal West
Pop melodies will be the theme of this night as Kishi Bashi rolls into Atlanta. The multi-instrumentalist known for his violin playing is a busy man. In addition to his solo work he provides his musical services to a wealth of musicians, including Athens’ of Montreal. Tunes from his solo record Lighght and maybe a few other gems will fill the lace with smooth tunes that are easy to listen to.

THURSDAY – 6/12/14

Jeff the Brotherhood @ the EARL
Guitar driven garage rock is what this duo does and damn do they do it good. Jeff the Brotherhood delivers raw in your face music built on raw bluesy sounds and slightly refined with soulful rhythms and pop melodies. Their music is loud and noisy walking that thin line between melodic and chaotic. When they play live they go fast and faster whipping the crowd into a frenzy with their lo-fi music. Check them out at the EARL and I dare you not to have a good time.

Rich Robinson @ Vinyl
Native Georgian Rich Robinson returns home on the heels of a new record, the Ceaseless Sight. Rocking guitars, bluesy undertones and his gruff vocals translate into one bad ass live show. He and his band never fail to impress the local crowd as they tear through songs from his multiple albums and usually a nice cover or two. This will be one of the best shows of the week.

Jake Bugg @ Variety Playhouse
One of the hottest names in music, Jake Bugg is taking the country by storm with his classic take on pop/rock music. His music lies somewhere between Bob Dylan and Van Morrison as the UK singer songwriter wins over listeners with brilliantly crafted tunes that get stuck in your head and refuse to leave. He most likely be playing to a packed house this Thursday and you should probably see him now before his career really skyrockets.

FRIDAY – 6/13/14

The Quaildogs @ Smiths Olde Bar
Mix in a little bit rock, a little bit country a little bit bluegrass and you have the Quaildogs. These guys are one of the more popular bands in Atlanta and they will pack the house then play off the electrified crowd. I have never seen a bad show from them. They will play all the favorites and from what I hear have been putting together some new tunes which should sound damn good. Good live music is always the thing needed to shake off any bad Friday the 13th mojo.

7Horse @ 120 Music Hall
Consisting of 2/3 of the band DADA, 7Horse has spent the last few years playing live and recording music. Leaving the jangly pop behind the duo delved into a bluesy rock sound that is a bit darker than their previous work. When they play live it is high energy and wide open as the music attacks the listener’s ears leaving them wanting more. If you dig a raw in your face sound then this is the place you need to be.

Kick The Robot @ Vinyl
One of my favorite live bands around town - Kick The Robot – has experienced a lot over the last year or so highlighted by the release of their first record and an opening slot for Elton John. Jangly guitars and melodic vocals help this trio dish out tunes that are closer to 70’s power pop than the stuff you hear today. Live is where they sound best and the room at vinyl is perfect for their music. Also Nashville’s MODOC will be bringing their psychedelic infused rock to town to join in the evening of sonic fun.

SATURDAY – 6/14/14

Foxy Shazam @ Terminal West
If rock is what you are looking for then Terminal West is where you need to be. Chunky guitars with the right amount of soul are what are on the menu as Foxy Shazam sets up to rock Atlanta. The place will be packed and the music will be loud as they show off tunes from the latest record. Don’t worry I am sure there will be plenty of everybody’s favorite tunes on the agenda.

SUNDAY – 6/15/14

Robert Earl Keen @ Variety Playhouse
A longtime favorite of just about every city he plays, Mr. Robert Earl Keen will once again grace Atlanta with his lighthearted witty tunes about Southern life. The packed house will sing along with every word as he rolls through all the favorites they want to hear. His live shows and devout fan base make his performances more of an experience than a concert. It should be a good one.

Go pick a show, support live music and have a good time.
